Non-Toxic Product Spotlight: Deodorant

Deodorant Wars. If you are on the hunt for a legit stick that actually works and won’t harm your body, read on and give one of my faves a try!

I have gone through countless “green” deodorants from Toms, Kiss My Face, green Target brands and even tried making my own….but each attempt has failed my under-arm odor horribly. Finding the perfect combo in a deodorant that is both non-toxic AND effective proved to be a real challenge for me.

Why bother with a natural deodorant you may ask? Let me enlighten you with a little armpit 101. Popular conventional deodorant brands like Dove, Secret, Degree and Old Spice are made with toxic chemicals and additives like aluminum and parabens (preservatives) which are directly absorbed through your skin. These toxic chemicals block your pores, prevent your body from sweating and cause irritation and imbalance. This is NOT okay. Your armpits were made to sweat because sweating rids your system of toxins, regulates body temperature and lowers the risk of certain diseases.

For those of you who are wondering what the deodorant cancer fuss is all about…

Both parabens and aluminum are “estrogenic” chemicals—meaning they interact with your body’s hormones or cells in ways similar to estrogen, NOT okay. This is especially concerning because excess estrogen plays a role in promoting the growth of cancer cells (National Cancer Institute). What’s more concerning is that parabens have been found in 99 percent of human breast tissue samples collected from mastectomies (Journal of Applied Toxicology).

Aluminum exposure, on the other hand, disrupts DNA and has been linked to Alzheimer’s Disease. Results from a 2008 study reveal 68% of the analyzed studies present aluminum as one of the risk factors for Alzheimer’s (Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology).

Clinical studies show a high incidence of breast cancer in the upper outer quadrant of the breast … supporting evidence for a role for locally applied cosmetic chemicals in the development of breast cancer (PubMed).

So, given ALL of this information, I would jump on the non-toxic deodorant and antiperspirant train ASAP! Here are some of my tried-and-true winners to spare you the hardship and keep your armpits toxin-free:

Their deodorant is made from all-natural and edible ingredients like coconut oil, carnauba wax, arrowroot powder, shea butter, baking soda and essential oils. Yup, no aluminum in this stick! And FYI, all of North Coast body products are made in small, artisanal batches and are BPA free, paraben free and sulfate-free. My favorite scent in the line is Death by Lavender.

What makes this deodorant unique is that it is activated by body heat. So, it isn’t your typical gel or soft powder stick. Rather, it is a more solid texture that activates to your body’s warmth as you start to apply it. This deodorant withstands my sweaty yoga sesh’s, leaves NO residue on my clothes and smells subtly wonderful. Basically, the name stands the test of time and my sweat and odor experience some serious death by lavender – ha ha! I snagged mine from Whole Foods but you can also order online here.

Another favorite aluminum-free deodorant that passed my pit test was Lavanila’s Healthy Deodorant. Lavanila is best known for their fragrance line (you have probably seen it at Sephora) but they also make a bunch of other delicious smelling body products and who would have thought- amazing deodorant!

I consider this more of a “dessert deodorant” and you will see why after you try! The scent is light and powdery and ultra smooth and seriously delivers sheer odor protection. More importantly, this brand considers sweating to be healthy (duh!) and sticks to natural organic ingredients in all of their products. If you are weary to make the jump to green deodorant, buy the travel size here!

Ursa Major $18

Received “Hoppin’ Fresh” in my Art of Organic beauty box and am so happy I did. I had seen this brand before but had yet to try out their much hyped about deodorant. I love how it goes on so silky smooth, is super effective and literally lasts forever.

This particular deodorant uses baking soda and eucalyptus: two natural, anti-bacterial and anti-microbial powerhouses. Not to mention,  the aloe helps soothe razor burn! Snag yours from Credo Beauty here.

So there you have it, my top pit picks!
